MESSAGE FROM FR KIERAN – Sunday 19th November

This Sunday our Church marks the first ever World Day of the Poor. This day was inaugurated at the end of the Jubilee of Mercy last year by Pope Francis who has consistently drawn attention to the poor of the world throughout his papacy.

There are many inequalities in our society which impoverish people. Poverty can take many forms and is caused by a whole variety of circumstances. We all have our opinions on why it exists in its many manifestations and what should be done to address it. One thing however on which we are all likely to agree is that there are sufficient resources in the world to tackle both the causes and the effects of poverty. What is usually lacking is the will and determination to apply those resources effectively where they are most needed.

People like Fr. Peter McVerry, Sister Stan and Brother Kevin Crowley are the visible faces of a Christian response to the poverty experienced by many people in Ireland today. They are supported in their work by the volunteers and donors who give freely of their time, energy and money. They embody the love of Jesus for the poor in our midst.

Every Christian is invited to reach out in solidarity to the poor. Over the coming weeks as we head towards Christmas, there will be many opportunities to support people in need. May we be generous in our giving and in bringing the love of God to the many people in our city and country who struggle to survive each day.
