MESSAGE FROM FR KIERAN – Sunday 14th January

The call of God features prominently in the Scripture readings at Mass this weekend. It is an open invitation from God to share in his life.

During his earthly life Jesus attracted many followers because of the authenticity of his way of living. No doubt the many signs and miracles he worked also helped arouse curiosity in people who came out to see him and hear what he had to say. Jesus welcomed all those who chose to follow him. He invited them to live in the way he lived himself, with a life characterised by love of God and love of neighbour.

The call of God is uniquely personal to every person. We are called by name to be a disciple. The response to this call is also personal. Each person must answer this call individually, saying yes to God from their heart and commiting to live as a Christian person in the world.

The story of the call of Samuel which we hear in the First Reading helps us to understand that discerning the call of God is a gradual process. At first we may not even realise that it is God who is calling us in life. The wisdom and encouragement of other people with whom we might talk and share our innermost thoughts can often help us in clarifying the call. It is then up to us to respond positively, to say our ‘yes’ to God, and to follow through with it. When Samuel, with the help of Eli, eventually realises that it is God who is calling him, he responds with the words – Speak, Lord, your servant is listening. Why not make these words your own in answering God’s call to you each day?
