This Sunday our Easter season draws to a close as we celebrate the feast of Pentecost marking the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the apostles meeting in Jerusalem. The gift that Jesus promised is now bestowed on the apostles. They are transformed as people and are now fully equipped to go out and begin the work that Jesus commanded them to do.

The apostles set out immediately to begin proclaiming the Good News. They cause a stir on the streets of Jerusalem as they go about their task of bringing the message of Jesus to the people. The Holy Spirit, dwelling within them, enables them to preach effectively and many hearts are turned to God as they give witness to the life of Jesus.

Today also we note the presence of Mary at the beginning of the new Christian community. Mary is intrinsically linked to the history of our salvation as the Mother of Jesus, accompanying Jesus throughout his earthly life, from the womb to the tomb. As Mary once watched over Jesus throughout his life, so now she watches over the Body of Christ on earth, the Christian community, and is rightly venerated under the title Mother of the Church.

The new feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, which was recently inserted by Pope Francis into the universal calendar of the Roman rite, is obviously of special significance to our parish. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, as Mother of the Church, continue to watch over and protect our parish and parishioners.
