MESSAGE FROM FR KIERAN – Sunday 16th September

The Scripture readings at Mass this weekend, and the Gospel in particular, make it very clear that being a disciple of Jesus Christ is no easy task. It’s a challenging and demanding vocation that requires effort, commitment and perseverance if it is to be faithfully lived.

Every believer must answer the question that Jesus poses in the Gospel – Who do you say I am? A personal relationship with Jesus is central to Christian life and living. Imagine Jesus putting that question to you today. What would you say in response? How would you answer it?

Jesus is not shy when it comes to talking about what will happen to him in Jerusalem. He does not try to water down the suffering that awaits him. Unpleasant and unpalatable as it is, Jesus knows that he must embrace what lies ahead if he is to fulfill the mission of salvation that he has come on earth to achieve. The great Christian symbol, the Cross, is a constant reminder for us of what Jesus did to save us.

Finally Jesus points out that his followers have to be prepared to take on all the ups and downs of life. There will tough and difficult moments in all our lives but perseverance and fidelity will ultimately bring the reward which we all seek, namely being with the Lord and sharing his glory in heaven for ever.

May the Lord support us all the day long as we strive to faithfully follow him in all that we do and say. Amen.
