MESSAGE FROM FR KIERAN – Sunday 11th November

The generosity of two widows is the central feature of the Scripture readings at Mass this Sunday. Both women were poor in material terms. They had very little of earthly wealth. But they were rich in generosity, willing to give with an open heart from what little they had.

The example of the two widows reminds us about the importance of not clinging to possessions and being able to let go of material things. It reminds us to be appreciative of the many good things we enjoy in life and to be generous in sharing what we have been blessed with in life.

The Gospel of Jesus invites us to live a kind of generosity that doesn’t attract attention or make for headlines. It’s a generosity that is sincere, that comes from the heart and is seen by God who will reward it with equal generosity in due course.

This Sunday is also a historic day in that exactly 100 years ago today the Armistice that brought an end to World War I came into force. The four years of bloody conflict that engulfed so many countries and claimed so many lives stand as a witness to the brutality and destruction that war brings. It was said to be the war to end all wars, a prophecy that sadly was not fulfilled. Just over twenty years later there was World War II and there have been many regional wars in the intervening years right up to the present day. Today we remember all those who have died in war and we pray especially for those who are working to resolve conflict and bring peace to our world.
