MESSAGE FROM FR KIERAN – Sunday 9th December

John the Baptist, one of the central figures of the Advent season, appears in the Gospel this Sunday announcing the coming of the Lord. Moreover he invites people to prepare for this event by repenting of their sins.

We can spend a lot of time and energy in these Advent days getting ready for Christmas. There is much to be done in a relatively short time. It is important that, amid all the hustle and bustle, we make room in our lives to prepare ourselves for a worthy celebration of the birth of Jesus in which God reveals his great love for all humanity.

In this context the call of John the Baptist to prepare a way for the Lord invites us to action. We are challenged to reflect on what obstacles we may be placing in the way of God that hinders his presence and work in us. Does my life or lifestyle limit the witness I give to Jesus as I go about my daily tasks and business? To what extent do my sins tarnish my discipleship of the Lord and what am I prepared to do about this?

In embodying his love for us in a human form in Jesus, God reveals the potential for love in every human person. God shows us how the human person can be a reflection of God’s divine person. The challenge for us as Christian people is to be holy as God is holy. This is why John the Baptist calls us in Advent to repent of our sins. It is a call to remove from our lives anything that prevents the love of God from being visible in our lives. May the grace of God be with us in these Advent days as we prepare ourselves for the coming of the Lord.
