MESSAGE FROM FR KIERAN – Sunday 13th January

This Sunday we recall the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan by John the Baptist. It was a significant moment in the life of Jesus. It marks the transition point between his hidden life in Nazareth of which we know almost nothing and his public ministry to the people of Israel that is recorded in great detail in the Gospels.

The baptism of Jesus is presented in the Scriptures as the official beginning of the ministry of Jesus. The accounts of the Baptism clearly attest to an understanding of Jesus as the anointed one of God and give legitimacy to his subsequent preaching and teaching.

Our own baptism into the Christian faith is a significant moment in our lives when we are formally welcomed into the Christian family. As most of us were baptised as infants we unfortunately have no memory of this event in our lives and no sense of occasion to treasure and reflect on. This is in stark contrast to the baptism of an adult where the decision to accept the salvation offered in Jesus and to live as a Christian is clearly seen as a decisive moment in a person’s life journey.

Today we are invited to reflect on the meaning of baptism in our own lives. What does it mean to accept the gift of salvation and be a disciple of Jesus? What implications does it have for my life and how I live it? Remember too the Holy Spirit of God who is gifted to us in Baptism and Confirmation to assist us in living out our baptismal commitment and in giving witness to the God who saves us.
