MESSAGE FROM FR KIERAN – Sunday 17th February

In the Gospel this Sunday we have Luke’s version of the Beatitudes. These teachings of Jesus invite us to reflection on the fundamental choices we make about our lives and how we live them as Christian people. There is often a stark contrast between the values espoused by Jesus and those of the secular world in which we live.

At a Mass in Malmo, Sweden, on 1st Noveber 2016 the Feast of All Saints, Pope Francis preached about the Beatitudes as the identity card of the Christian person. Living the Beatitudes identifies us as the followers of Jesus and enables us to bring the spirit and love of Jesus to bear on the pressing issues of our time. Pope Francis proposed some “new Beatitudes” for our consideration which are worth reflecting on.

  • Blessed are those who remain faithful while enduring evils inflicted on them by others, and forgive them from their heart.
  • Blessed are those who look into the eyes of the abandoned and marginalized, and show them their closeness.
  • Blessed are those who see God in every person, and strive to make others also discover him.
  • Blessed are those who protect and care for our common home.
  • Blessed are those who renounce their own comfort in order to help others.
  • Blessed are those who pray and work for full communion between Christians.
