MESSAGE FROM FR KIERAN – Sunday 16th February

We can all be tempted at times to keep up appearances. We want to be heard saying the right thing and be seen doing the right thing, even if at times we do not really believe in what we are saying or doing. We want others to think well of us, so we can all too often put on a false face and go along with what is expected of us. We can pretend that all is ok with us and everything is fine when sometimes it is not.

In terms of everyday Christian living, Jesus challenges us in the Gospel this Sunday to reflect on our motivation for being the people we are. Are we living to please others, or because we believe in what we live ? Jesus invites us to focus on our interior attitude – what is in our heart, rather than on the external observance.

Authentic Christian living comes from a heart that is turned towards God, a heart that is filled with the love of God and with a desire for that love to be expressed outwardly in our love of neighbour. When we are truly Christian, there is no need for pretence, no keeping up of appearances. A Christian is one who ‘does what it says on the tin’.

God our Father, you alone see into the depths of our being. Grant us the grace we need to be faithful to you. Guide us in living your ways from the heart, even as we follow them outwardly. Help us to be sincere and genuine in our Christian living. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
